Jeremy Hunt warns Boris Johnson could suffer election failure as he uncovers ‘big lie’

The former Foreign Secretary had run against the Prime Minister and become his main opponent in the Tory leadership election. Mr Hunt had been offered the role of Defence Secretary which was a demotion from his previous position. Host Iain Dale questioned why he didn’t choose to “unify” the country by accepting to be part of Mr Johnson’s Cabinet.

Speaking to LBC, Mr Hunt said: “It’s a wonderful job and I passionately think we need to spend more on defence and who knows for the future.

“But during that campaign I realised at one point I had been in the Cabinet for every hour each of my three kids have been alive.

“I thought this is the time I take a step back and be a better dad.

“I’ve been able to walk them to school which I just wasn’t able to do before.”

Mr Dale asked: “How is that changed you? You’re right, being in Government you do get used to not having the weekend to yourself.”

Mr Hunt responded: “Truthfully I think the big lie for politicians is when they’re doing big jobs in the Cabinet you persuade yourself you’re being a good dad and you attend the odd school play.

“But you are always busy and there is always something on your mind.

“You don’t realise it and it’s not until you get off the hamster wheel you realise what it’s like to spend unpressured time with your family.”

The host went on to ask Mr Hunt whether he would rejoin Government if Mr Johnson was re-elected on December 13.

He said: “I don’t rule out a return to frontline politics but I’d like to wait a bit longer.

“This is a special moment for me to spend time with my family and constituency.

“But what I want is for Boris to be in a position to form that Government and I do think this election is going to be a lot closer than many people seem to believe.”

He went on to warn that Mr Johnson faces a huge issue if he doesn’t win a majority.

Mr Hunt said: “The single thing you have to remember is there is no party in Parliament that will form an alliance with the Conservatives if there is no majority.”

It comes as the Liberal Democrats have been forming a Remain Alliance with SNP and Plaid Cymru.

But the Labour Party hasn’t formed any pacts.
