‘Fantastical and absurd’ – Brexit Party MEP issues warning to Boris over Brexit promise

After failing to deliver on his “do or die” pledge to take the UK out of the EU on October 31, the Prime Minister called an election in order to break the deadlock in Parliament. Amid fear the Brexit Party could do significant damage to his election hopes, Boris Johnson ruled out extending the EU transition period in a pact with Nigel Farage to not split the Leave vote.

Under the pledge, the Brexit Party will only stand 274 candidates and will target Labour stronghold in the north and Midlands.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Brexit Party MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, Jake Pugh has warned the Prime Minister he must deliver on his pledge to finally deliver Brexit in January.

Mr Pugh said: “‘Getting Brexit done’ is fantastical and absurd.

“Everyone recognises that there is real exhaustion over Brexit across the country.

“Boris has made a commitment that he will not extend the transition beyond 2020.

“We will ensure that the Conservative party is held to that pledge.”

Following the announcement of the non-aggression pledge, Brexit Party chairman, Richard Tice claimed some party candidates had been pressured by the Tories to stand down.

Mr Farage also claimed the Prime Minister’s aide, Sir Edward Lister had offered Brexit Party candidates jobs if they withdrew from the election.

Mr Farage wrote on Twitter: “Even Boris Johnson’s Chief Strategic Adviser Sir Edward Lister is calling our candidates and offering them jobs if they withdraw.

“The system is corrupt and broken.”

Although No 10 has denied the claims, Mr Farage insisted the Tories had offered eight peerages as incentives.

Despite the alleged propositions from the Tories, Mr Pugh had stated that his party’s main focus is to deliver Brexit and stop a second referendum.

He added: “The purpose is to do what we can to prevent a second referendum.

“We are trying to stop a second ref as it would be so damaging.”

In light of the Brexit Party’s claims to stop a second referendum, Lib Dem leader, Jo Swinson has admitted that she would demand another general election if no party wins a majority.

Ms Swinson, who’s party has pledged to cancel Brexit and has stated that if neither Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn win a majority, she would rather force another election.

Asked whether she would back Mr Corbyn in a confidence vote aimed at forming a minority Labour government, she said she would reject him or get her party to abstain in the vote.

Speaking to the Financial Times, she said: “Look, Liberal Democrat votes are not going to put Jeremy Corbyn into Downing Street.

“He is not fit to do that job.”

Mr Pugh’s pledge to make sure the Tories deliver Brexit comes as Australia has demanded compensation over trade disruption.

Australia and several non-EU countries are demanding compensation from the UK and EU for Brexit-related disruption to trade.

During negotiations at the World Trade Organisation in Geneva, Australia said its beef and lamb exports have already been badly affected.

Australia has stated that it could suffer a £284million ($366million) reduction of meat exports to the UK and EU as a result.
