A1 traffic latest: A1 CLOSED as flooding sparks chaos in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire

Highways England said the A1 in South Yorkshire has been closed in both directions between junction 34, near Blyth, and junction 35 at Alverley. The closure is due to flooding from heavy rainfall, with South Yorkshire Police and Highways England Traffic Officers currently attending the scene. The A1 in Nottinghamshire’s northbound carriage between the B6325 near North Muskham and the B1164 near Tuxford has also been closed due to standing water on the carriageway.

Highways England is currently working hard to reopen the carriageway.

Diversions are in place in both areas, but commuters have been warned delays are likely.

At 7.29am Highways England posted on Twitter to confirm they are still dealing with issues caused by the flooding and will share information as soon as the road has been reopened.

Shortly before 7am, Highways England said the southbound junction between J34 and J35 of the A1 in South Yorkshire has been reopened.

They added that they are in the process of reopening the northbound carriage.

But commuters have taken to social media to warn others of traffic delays.

Yesterday a 16-mile stretch of the A1 was closed for over five hours due to flooding.

The stretch of road was shut between the B6325 Great North Road and Vicarage Lane, near the North Muskham and Bathley turn off.

The road closure caused severe traffic delays due to congestion on surrounding routes.

The Environment Agency has 13 flood warnings in place for the county and surrounding area, meaning flooding is expected.

There are also 31 flood alerts in place which means that flooding is possible.

Northern Rail has urged customers not to use some of its services due to flooding on the lines.
