'Unicorn puppy' with tail growing out of his head is rescued from the street

A ‘unicorn puppy’ with a second tail growing out of his forehead has been described as ‘absolutely perfect’ by a rescue centre.

Narwhal, named after the tusked mammal, was found wandering the streets of Missouri and taken into Mac’s Mission, who specialise in helping dogs with special needs.

The centre’s founder says the 10-week-old puppy has since become their biggest attraction, with volunteers always asking if they can play with him when they visit.

Rochelle Steffen said: ‘He’s literally the most magical thing you’ve ever seen, and so happy. Everybody wants to see him.’

Narwhal underwent an X-ray when he arrived at the centre, which showed there are no bones in the ‘tail’ on his face.

Vets said the puppy has a clean bill of health, but Ms Steffen doesn’t want to adopt him out until they know whether his ‘unicorn horn’ will become an issue.

She said: ‘We don’t want to adopt him out and two weeks later it does become a problem.’

Mac’s Mission have previously cared for a dog with five legs, a three-legged dachshund, blind and deaf animals, as well as dogs with cleft palates and mange.

But Ms Steffen said they have never seen anything like Narwhal before.

She said he is currently enjoying being a ‘normal, happy, healthy puppy’ who is getting lots of attention.

Ms Steffen said: ‘Everybody has said that it looks like a tail that just didn’t develop fully, like he might have tried to absorb a twin and it just didn’t work all the way.

‘It kind of curls right down under his eyes. We deal with such unique animals here that we love to let them keep their uniqueness.’

She added: ‘Everyone sees him and they literally want to rip him out of my arms immediately.

‘It’s been really good for our itty-bitty rescue to have such a rock star in our midst because all this attention is helping so many of our other dogs.

‘He loves it, he’s like, “who’s going to hold me next?” He’s just this little anomaly that’s absolutely perfect.’
