Teen pleads guilty to pushing her friend off a bridge

A 19-year-old woman in Washington has pleaded guilty to pushing her friend off a bridge into a river near Vancouver, causing serious injuries.

Footage of the attack went viral last summer – and showed Taylor Smith shoving Jordan Holgerson from the bridge at Moulton Falls as the 16-year-old deliberated over whether to jump.

Smith pleaded guilty at Clark County District Court to misdemeanour reckless endangerment on Monday, which carries a one-year jail term and a fine of $5,000 (£3,700).

Court records say Smith “engaged in conduct which created a substantial risk of death and resulted in serious physical injury”.

Prosecutors in the case are recommending no jail time when Smith is sentenced later this month.

The push was captured on video which went viral

The bridge at Moulton Falls above the Lewis River stands at 15m (50ft).

Jordan hit the water on her front, and suffered six broken ribs and punctured lungs.

After the incident last summer, Ms Holgerson told NBC News she is “wanting [Smith] to sit in jail and think about at least what she did”.

Moulton Falls near Vancouver is popular with thrill seekers

People who use the bridge say they try to land feet first, otherwise the fall can feel like hitting concrete.

Jordan’s mother told reporters outside the courtroom that her and her daughter just want this chapter of their lives to be over.

Smith will be sentenced on 27 March.
